OCC Softball Team Opens Season in Southern States

The Olney Central College softball team opened the season playing four games Sunday, February 24.

The Knights opened with a doubleheader at Jackson State Community College in Jackson, Tenn. The Knights split the twinbill, losing 5-4 in eight innings in the first game before rebounding with a 6-5 win in game two. The Knights left 13 runners on base in the first game while committing seven errors as well.

Brie Bennett got the no decision in game one, going five innings and not yielding an earned run. Cumberland graduate Shana Marti took the hard-luck loss throwing the last three innings. Tyler Allen and Hailey Flexter, an Altamont graduate, each collected two hits, while Samantha Ledbetter had a two RBI double.

Colleen Hadley pitched six solid innings in game two to get the win, while Olivia Harrelson nailed down the save. Hadley spread out three hits, and did not give up an earned run either. Allen again led the offense, going three-for-four with two RBI, and Ledbetter went two-for-four with another double.

The Knights then headed back to Dyersburg, Tenn. to play Dyersburg State Community College. The Knights dropped a 6-0 decision in the opener. After taking seven innings to wake up, the Knights rebounded with a 14-6 victory to salvage the split.

Marti got the win in game two (game four overall) by going 6.2 innings. OCC exploded at the plate, scoring 14 runs on 21 hits. Alicyn Woodward led the way by going five-for-five with five runs scored. Ledbetter went four-for-five with a three-run homer and her third double on the day. Alexis Chapman went three-for-five with four RBI including a three-run homerun. Flexter collected three hits as well.
