Altamont Edges State-Ranked Softball Teams

Altamont High School picked up two close softball victories Saturday.
The Indians edged Columbia 11-10. Columbia held a 1-0 first inning lead before Altamont came back with four runs in the third. Columbia moved ahead 8-4 after five innings but here came the Indians once again. This time they scored seven runs to push ahead 11-8. Columbia then had the opportunity to tie or win the game in the bottom of the seventh but fell a run short.
Altamont had 12 hits in the contest led by Brooke Burns with three singles and an RBI, Lauren White with a single, double and an RBI, Elizabeth Biggs with three singles and two RBI and Deidre Ledbetter with two singles.
Biggs picked up the pitching win, going four innings, allowing seven runs, six hits and three walks. Ledbetter picked up the save.
Altamont then edged Carterville 5-4. Carterville took a 2-0 lead in the third. Altamont tallied a run in the fourth and pushed ahead 5-2 in the fifth. Carterville made a comeback bid in the sixth with two runs.
Altamont had eight hits led by Ledbetter and White with a double and an RBI each, Nikki Tharp with three singles and two RBI and Madison Ohnesorge with two singles. Ledbetter was the winning pitcher on a five-hitter with one walk and seven strikeouts.
