Bulldogs Down Olney, EHS Falls to Griffin

OLNEY -- Effingham St. Anthony High School traveled to Olney and edged the homestanders 6-5 in softball competition Wednesday.

The two squads were tied at 2-2 after three innings. The Bulldogs scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Olney pulled within 4-3 afer six. St. Anthony scored two more in the top of the seventh then held off a bottom of the inning challenge by the Tigers.

Jenna Woltman was the winning pitcher going all seven innings allowing five hits, seven walks and striking out seven.

St. Anthony had 13 hits led by Paige Koester with three singles, Megan Nuxoll with two singles, a double and an RBI, Jenna Woltman with a singel and double and Makayla Walsh with a double and
two RBI.

At Effingham

Effingham High School played host to Springfield Sacred-Heart Griffin in softball action and fell 8-4 Wednesday.

Sacred Heart-Griffin opened up with four runs in the top of the first but the Hearts came back with three runs in the bottomm of the frame. Both teams tallied a run in the fifth and Griffin ran ahead with a run in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Griffin banged out 14 hits in the contest and Effingham had two errors.

Brittany Beal led the Hearts with a double, home run and four RBI while Shelby Nunamaker and Kaylee Tonn had two singles each.

McLean led Springfield with a double and triple while Greiser had a single, home run and an RBI and Dyche had a single and double.

The game was the season opener for the Hearts who are back in action Friday hosting LaSalle-Peru.
