Shoes Edge Bulldogs, Hearts Down Indians in Soccer

TEUTOPOLIS -- The St. Anthony High School soccer team traveled to cross-town rival Teutopolis High School Tuesday and fell to the Wooden Shoes 3-2.

"We knew it would be a good game," said St. Anthony Coach Scott Demers. "The match was level until Teutopolis midfielder, Kyle Blievernicht got the ball just past the midfield line, dribbled towards our goal and ripped a shot about 20 yards out past our keeper, Zach Tegeler.  Tegeler was shielded by all of the traffic in front of the goal but the Shoes midfielder made a great shot.

"The Shoes scored again when they were awarded a penalty kick after Bulldog senior Benton Hakman made a good play but was called for a mysterious foul against a Shoes forward. Blievernicht also put the ball into the net to lead the Shoes to a 2-0 score through halftime.

"Although the game was even between the two teams, there was more going against us than just the opposing players. The second half would prove to be just as exciting as the first especially due to the officiating that was present.

"We put in the first of two goals when James Kabbes received a flick-pass from Zaine Reiss and buried the ball into the net. Teutopolis put in the third and last goal for them when Blievernicht threw the ball in to a waiting forward who headed the ball past our defense. We were able to get another goal when the ball was misplayed at the top of the penalty box and Jonas Amberg beat the Shoes team to a loose ball.

The two teams face off again Tuesday in the regional semi-finals in Olney.

"Every dog has its day and we will have ours," finished Demers.

St. Anthony game MVPs were Zach Tegeler, Benton Hakman, Zaine Reiss and James Kabbes. The Bulldogs varsity record is 11-7-3.

In the junior varsity match, St. Anthony and T-town played to a 0-0 tie. The game MVP for the Bulldogs was Ashley Dietzen.

 

At Effingham

Effingham handed Altamont a 5-1 loss in action on the Hearts home field Thursday.

Altamont opened the scoring when Parker Asplin scored with 36:32 left in the first half. That was the lone goal for the Indians.

Effingham came back to tie the score on a goal by Jason Pike with an assist from Tyler Katz with 13:27 left in first half. EHS then moved to 2-1 at the half when Sean Zerrusen scored on an assist from Katz with 12:01 left.

Effingham tallied three goals in the second half. Austin Wenthe scored unassisted with 32:59 left. Jake Gadberry scored on an assist from Wenthe with 24:11 left and Dalton Steele scored unassisted with 14:22 left in the game.

Jared Minor made his first career start in goal for Effingham and made one save. Altamont keeper Adam Doty had 11 saves. Effingham took 25 shots, 16 on goal.

Effingham moves to 10-6-3 on the season. The Hearts next game is Tuesday at home against Charleston. Senior Recognition Night will take place for the EHS seniors. The ceremony will take place after the varsity game which begins at 4 p.m. It will be at approximately 5:30 p.m.
