Effingham High School blanked Altamont 8-0 in Saturday soccer competition.

"From the very beginning, we cleaned up our play and our ball movement was finally becoming what we have been striving for," said EHS Coach Weston Peno. "We controlled the field and communciated well. This translated in clean and effective defending, and smart, purposeful goals.

"Seeing the way they played Saturday was like watching a brand new team. I am very proud of all the work my players are putting into the game and it is showing a clear payoff."

Goals for the Hearts included Tucker Moeller with three, Osvaldo Angel with three, Bryan Angel with one and Armando Estrada with one goal. Brandon Duncan had one save.

"Jeridyn Thomas also had a clutch save, as Brandon had punched the ball out," said Peno. "Altamont had a really nice crash and sent it right back to the goal. Jeridyn reacted quickly and got a foot on the ball last second, clearing what would have been a goal.

"Again great work from the kids this Saturday."

Altamont fell to Carlyle in Friday competition, 3-2.

Carlyle tallied the first goal at the 26:43 mark. Altamont's Noah Klimpel scored with 25:00 for a 1-1 tie. Donovan Delany gave Altamont the lead at 17:13, 2-1. But Carlyle came back with two goals for the victory.

Altamont had 11 shots, nine on goal. Kenny Robbins had seven saves while Kolby Brewer had six.

Carlyle had 10 shots on goal and seven saves.
