Effingham St. Anthony and Hillsboro played to a 2-2 tie in soccer competition Saturday.

Hillsboro took the early lead. With 20 minutes left in the first half, the Hiltoppers scored a goal when their left winger kicked a quick shot to the near post.

Less than a minute after that, St. Anthony's Will Swingler took a free kick into the box, where Reilly Ashton scored a header and the two teams were tied at 1-1. With two minutes left in the first half, Swingler and Ashton connected again like the first goal but this time Swingler was taking a corner. The Bulldogs held a 2-1 halftime tally.

"Four minutes into the second half, Hillsboro took a nice shot from the top of the box of Ivan Dong's left that was re-routed to the top corner by one of our defenders for an own-goal," said St. Anthony Coach Martin Reyes. "Ivan was on the air going down to get the ball when it got kicked up and there was nothing he could do."

The teams finished with a 2-2 tie. Dong had 10 saves and Ivan Daiber had two for the Bulldogs. Ashton had two goals, six steals and six shots. Swingler had two assists, five corners and two shots on goal. Jack Elder and Will Fonner had six steals each.

"We are playing well and the team is developing chemistry," said Reyes. "I'm looking forward to our players getting healthy so we can show what we have."
