Effingham High School's soccer season came to a close in the Class 2A Effingham Regional Wednesday.

The Hearts dropped a 4-3 match to Carterville but not without a fight. The contest went double overtime.

Nathan Barrett scored first for Carterville but Effingham's Parker Siner came through to tie the score at 1-1.

Victor Carrillo sailed one through the Carterville goalie's hands to push the Hearts ahead 2-1.

Siner came through once again and the Hearts took a 3-1 lead into the half.

But the second half was a different story. The Lions' Hayden Holloway scored off a free kick and suddenly they were within one.

With a little over seven minutes in the contest, Carterville's Caleb Knight nailed a penalty kick and that tied the game at 3-3.

The two teams went into overtime but neither team scored so a second overtime started. Carterville's Jake Baumgarte then came through with the winning goal with around seven minutes left in the contest. EHS couldn't come up with a goal and that ended its season at 7-10-1.

Carterville advances to a meeting with Marion at 11 a.m. Saturday for the regional championship.
