Newton Falls in Soccer Sectional

RAYMOND -- Newton High School saw its season come to a close at the Class 1A Raymond Lincolnwood Soccer Sectional Tuesday at Raymond Park.

Riverton scored the first three goals as Seth Tavener tallied a goal and Brady Fletcher two goals.

Newton's Ross Farley then tallied a goal. Taverner scored againbefore Farley scored his second goal for the Eagles.

David Hagge made the score 5-2 before Newton's Toni Tortella tallied a goal. Riverton's Taverner then finished out with two more goals and his final count was four scores.

In the second match, Quincy Notre Dame beat Rosamond Faith Bible Christian Academy, 8-0. Quincy Notre Dame will meet Riverton at 11 a.m. Saturday for the championship.

 

Class 2A Effingham Regional

Marion moved into the championship match of the Effingham Regional by beating Olney, 3-1 Tuesday.

Marion took an early lead with two goals in the first half. Tyson Stoecklin and Hamzah Baker both scored a goal.

Marion added a goal in the second half by Zachary Underwood. Olney rallied with a goal by Seth Ingram with 8:15 to go in the match.

Marion was able to hold off the Tigers to win the match. Camden Dodds had eight saves for the winners.

Marion advances to the 11 a.m. championship match against either Effingham or Carterville Co-op. Those two teams battle today at 4 p.m.
