SALEM -- Effingham St. Anthony High School edged host Salem 1-0 in soccer competition Thursday.

The only goal of the game came in the second half from St. Anthony's Patrick Martelli with an assist by Zaine Reiss. Reiss placed a pass past Salem defenders and Martelli raced through and beat the Salem goalkeeper with a strong left-footed boot. Zach Tegeler had 10 saves and was named St. Anthony Player of the Game.

"The team really pulled things together the second half and held Salem to one shot on goal and controlled the ball," said St. Anthony Coach Scott Demers. "This was at turning point for the team and the season. We now need to keep the momentum going."

The Bulldogs improve to 5-6-2 on the season and return to action Saturday against Pana.

The two teams played to a 0-0 junior varsity tie.
