Effingham Wins Charleston Gold Pool

Effingham High School captured the Gold Pool in the Charleston Red & Gold Soccer Invitational during the weekend.

Effingham tallied nine points to win the Gold Pool followed by Centralia 6, Danville JV 3 and Decatur MacArthur 0.

In the match against Decatur MacArthur, Effingham won 3-0. Michael Carie scored a goal with an assist from Matt Steffen. The second goal came from Austin Wenthe with an assist from Alex Carie. Tyler Katz scored a goal with an assists by Caleb Gadberry.

Mattoon won the Red Pool with 9 points followed by Teutopolis 6, Charleston 3 and Olney 0.

Teutopolis defeated Charleston 4-1 with Jordan Niebrugge scoring three goals and Ryan Westendorf one. In the second game, the Wooden Shoes fell to Mattoon 2-1. Westendorf tallied the lone goal first for the Shoes before Mattoon followed up with two.

In the third contest, T-town blanked Olney 2-0. Kyle Blievernicht headed one in from a corner kick with only 10 minutes left in the first half. T-town followed up with one more from Justin Deters taking one off of the chest from a corner kick, putting it into the net.

In junior varsity play, Mattoon won the Red Pool with 7 points followed by Charleston 7, Olney and Teutopolis. In Gold Pool play, Champaign Central won with 9 points followed by Urbana 6, Effingham 3 and Centralia 0.

All-Tournament Teams were named. On the varsity for Effingham were Dalton Steele, junior goalkeeper, Caleb Gadberry, senior midfield and Alex Carie, senior midfield.

On the junior varsity, named for Effingham were, Jacob Gadberry, sophomore defense, Tyler Katz, sophomore midfield and Sean Zerrusen, freshman forward.

On the varsity for Teutopolis were Jordan Niebrugge, senior midfield, Alex Niebrugge, senior defense and Kyle Blievernicht, junior midfield.

On the junior varsity for Teutopolis were Kyle Deters, freshman midfield, Andy Mersman, freshman forward and Nick Ruholl, sophomore defense.
