Lots Of Events Happened At Harness Racing Tuesday

ALTAMONT -- Eleven races were on tap Tuesday as harness racing returned to the track at the Effingham County Fair after being postponed due to rain Monday.

Monday's card was contested first. Freddie Patton Jr. came into Tuesday's races ahead in the driver's standings with 21 points followed by Wyatt Avenatti with 17.

Patton added to his lead with a victory in the opening race of the day, the Maiden Trot AE: Nonwinners of $1,500 in '19. He took Show Stoppin Monkey to a win after trailing leader Fox Valley Sienna through most of the race. Show Stoppin Monkey challenged at the three quarters and rallied for the win in 2:06. The nine-year-old has 32 wins.

Patton then took Mc Jack to victory in the Open Maiden Pace AE: ICF Nonwinners 2. Going offstride at the start of the race, Mc Jack trailed by 10 lengths but came charging back to enter the fray. Not only did Mc Jack make up the 10 lengths, the winner crossed the finish line for Patton 12 lengths ahead of second place finisher Pink Champion. Mc Jack won in 2:07 4/5.

The Free For All Pace went to Rockinroman Reigns in a crowd-pleasing finish. Rockinroman Reigns took the lead but it was a slugfest with Lilys Real Boy. Lily's Real Boy took the lead then here came Rockinroman Reigns. Michael Johnson took the homebred horse to the front and ended up winning at the wire in the fastest time of the week, 1:59 1/5.

Other winners on the Monday card included Ryans Allegra in the 2-Year-Old Open Pace in 2:09 4/5 for Michael Rogers, Pauline's Ashley in the Fillies & Mares Trot in 2:14 for Matthew Avenatti and Avenatti picked up another victory in the Open Colt/Gelding Trot with Tarot. Tarot took the lead and never let go in picking up his sixth victory in a row.

Then it was time for the five races on Tuesday's card.

In the third race, the Big 10 2-Year-Old Colt Trot, Eclipse Corona and Easy Eo were neck and neck. Eclipse Corona broke stride as did Easy Eo. Easy Eo regained stride and went on to win for driver Chris Brown in 2:12 3./5.

Eclipse Corona, trained by Altamont's Ray Hanna, went around to the backstretch, collapsed and unfortunately fell to the track and died. The final two races were delayed.

Freddie Patton Jr. moved even farther ahead in the driver's standings by picking up a victory in the fourth race, the Open Maiden Pace AE: ICF Nonwinners 2. Invisible Man moved ahead at the halfway point by a head and went side-by-side with Truly Real through three quarters. Invisible Man held the lead turning for home and finished in 2:03 3/5.

Patton moved his lead to 45 points, 15 points ahead of second place Matthew Avenatti.

In the opener, Darla Martin Lohman took Ashlees Spur to victory in the Big 10 2-Year-Old Pace. Ashlees Spur and Dancin Eyes fought for the lead. Ashlees Spur kicked in down the stretch to win by five lengths in 2:03 for its fifth victory in a row. Martin picked up her 15th consecutive win at the Effingham County Fair.

The second race went to High Queen Anne, owned by Darla Martin Lohman. Claiming the win in the sulky was Lohman's brother David Martin in 2:08 2/5.

The final race of the day, the Open Maiden Trot AE: ICF Nonwinners 2, went to 89-year-old driver Buddy Simpson.

Evita's Doll, who had picked up a first victory earlier in the week at Altamont, took the early lead and held it until the three quarter mile marker. There was then a battle for the lead and Accokeek Mars moved ahead by a length and went on to win in 2:07 2/5 for Simpson.

Racing continues Wednesday with a 1 p.m. post time.
