Effingham High School freshman Avery Braunecker finished second in the state in both of her events at the Illinois High School Association Swimming and Diving Championships in Evanston on Saturday.
Braunecker took second in the 50 yard freestyle in :23.09 while in the 100 yard Freestyle she finished second with a time of :50.97.
Olivia Smoliga from Glenview Glenbrook South won the 50 in :21.99. Smoliga, a senior, holds the national high school record time in the 50. Gabby Sims, a junior from Downers Grove North, won the 100 in :49.57.
Braunecker, the 14-year-old daughter of Matt and Elizabeth Braunecker, said, "The energy (at the meet) was beyond amazing; the student sections would get crazy. My senior year, I want a student section like that!"
Asked what the second at State finishes meant to her, Braunecker said, "When I touched the wall, it was like all of the training I've done paid off."
We had the chance to speak with Avery Monday afternoon, and her interview is below.
