A group of area volunteers announce the upcoming “Team Luke” 5K Race, One-Mile Fun Run/Walk and Kid Fun Runs to benefit the Luke Johnson family, and the Pope John Paul II Stem Cell Research Institute. Multiple events are offered to individuals of all fitness levels to encourage participation in this meaningful, family-friendly event. The Kid Fun Runs are designed especially for kids aged three years to eight years.
The “Team Luke” race is being held to raise awareness for childhood cancer, and to benefit and honor Luke Johnson and his family. Luke, the son of Rick and Jami Johnson, was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of three. He was in remission for two years before the leukemia returned this fall. Luke is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment.
The “Team Luke” event will be held Saturday, December 1, at St. Anthony Grade School in Effingham. The Kid Fun Runs begin at 9 a.m.; the 5K Run/Walk and One-Mile Fun Run start at 9:30 a.m.
Participants will enjoy a special guest appearance from the St. Louis Cardinal’s Fred Bird, thanks to Effingham Surgical Associates in Effingham. Other special features of the event include a visit from Santa Claus and the Effingham Fire Department.
Individuals can register online at active.com and search for Team Luke 5K & Kids Fun Run. Information may also be found on Facebook.com.
