U.S. Basketball Team Captures Gold
The U.S. men's basketball team captured another gold medal on Sunday with a 107-100 victory over Spain in the final of the London Olympics.Kevin Durant scored 30 points and LeBron James added 19 for the Americans, who claimed their 14th Olympic gold medal and second in a row. The U.S. also beat Spain four years ago for the title in Beijing and has won five of the six gold medals since NBA stars began Olympic play at the 1992 Barcelona Games. Russia
took the bronze medal with an 81-77 triumph over Argentina.
Jake Varner of the United States won gold in the men's 96-kilogram weight class Sunday at the London Games, defeating Valerii Andriitsev of the Ukraine in the final bout. After mounting comeback in the semifinals to defeat George Gogshelidze of Georgia, Varner beat his Ukrainian opponent, 1-0, 1-0, for gold.
The London Olympics came to an end Sunday night with a tuneful celebration built to celebrate the city's people, music and culture over the past 50 years. After 16 days, London was sending the world home with performances by a
who's who of singers, bands and comedians. Yes, even The Who. All the hallmarks of a closing ceremony were planned, including a Summer Games handoff to Rio de Janeiro, the first South American city ever to host an Olympics. The United States finished atop the medal standings with 104 medals, including a games-best 46 gold. China had 87 medals with 38 golds and Russia earned 82 medals, including 24 gold. Great Britain racked up 2 golds among its 65 medals.
