Members of the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Student Advisory Committee (SAC) gathered at the IHSA offices in Bloomington August 3-4 to attend the group's annual retreat.
Fifteen members of the 21-student committee, which consists of representation from each ofthe IHSA's 21 geographic districts, were in attendance. Attendees included Nicholas Reis (Newton), Crofton Kelly (St. Ignatius), Barrington Wade (Niles North), Alexandra Buckley, (Dundee-Crown), Marissa Miller (Wauconda), Barret Benson, (Hinsdale South), John Roberts (Oak Lawn), Milena Singletary (Joliet Central), Patrick Gustafson (Aquin), Kelsey Bartman (Metamora), Austin Maltbia (Champaign Centennial), Emily Farris (Flanagan-Cornell), Katle Karssen (Knoxille), Kathleen Kelly (Carlinville) and Blake Suhling (Riverton).
The group's weekend included a variety of large-group and breakout activities that focused on leadership, communication, team-building and sportsmanship. The group also began preparations for the 2015 IHSA Student Leadership Conference. The SAC conducted the IHSA's second Student Leadership Conference at the Peoria Civic Center in September, 2013. The biennial event, which drew nearly 700 students in 2013, is slated to be held again in September, 2015.
"The students on this committee were selected due to their leadership skills and desire to make a difference," said IHSA Assistant Executive Director Beth Sauser. "The fact that they would give up time during their busy summers, especially with many of them ready to begin fall sports and activities, speaks volumes about their character. The same must be said about our adult volunteers, who make this fun and productive event possible."
