Lincoln Presidential Library to display handwritten Gettysburg Address
Fam ous speech on display starting Nov. 14
The Gettysburg Address is Abraham Lincoln’s most famous speech, con taining some of the greatest language in history. It helped changed the way America looked at the Civil War. And now it will be on display at the Abra ham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum for two weeks.
The handwritten copy will be displayed in the museum’s Trea sures Gallery from Nov. 14 through Dec. 2. The anniversary of the speech is Tuesday, Nov. 19.
The document – one of ju st five surviving copies written by Lincoln – stays in a climate-controlled vault most of the time to protect it from light and humidity. The display in the museum’s Treasures Gallery offers visitors a rare chance to see the paper where Lincoln wrote “Four score and seven years ago …”
“This document is a tangible connection to President Linc oln and the turmoil of the Civil War. We look at his handwriting on this pl ain, white paper and imagine him searching for just the right words for a n ation torn in two,” said Dr. Samuel Wheeler, the Illinois state historian. “Everyone should take the opportunity to see this piece of history with the ir own eyes.”
The Lincoln Presidential Libr ary also offers a way to engage children in learning about the address and its importance: a puzzle version of the address. Teachers or parents can do wnload it, print out its 272 words and then challenge students to put the s crambled words back in the correct order.
P reparing for the puzzle challenge requires students to learn the address th oroughly and gives teachers an opportunity to discuss its impact on America n history. Download it at bit.ly/getty sburgpuzzle (PDF).
Lincoln delivered th e speech in 1863 at the dedication of a cemetery for soldiers killed in the Battle of Gettysburg.
He said the fallen s oldiers had already consecrated the site “far above our poor power to add o r detract.” It was now the duty of the living, he said, to seek “a new birt h of freedom.”
After the speech, Lincoln wr ote out a copy for Edward Everett, who had been the main speaker at the cem etery dedication. Everett then sold the speech to raise money for the benef it of wounded soldiers. Four score years later, it was for sale again and I llinois schoolchildren donated pennies and nickels so the state could buy t he document. That copy of the address is the one now housed at the presiden tial library.
The Abraham Lincoln President ial Library and Museum uses a combination of rigorous scholarship and high- tech showmanship to immerse visitors in Lincoln’s life and times. The libra ry holds an unparalleled collection of Lincoln books, documents, photograph s, artifacts and art, as well as some 12 million items pertaining to all as pects of Illinois history.
