Conservation District Hosting Two Astronomy Programs in August

Explore the cosmos with Macon County Conservation District staff at two outdoor astronomy programs in August: the Perseid Meteor Shower, on Wednesday, August 12 and the annual Astronomy Jamboree on Saturday, August 22.

Attendance at both events is limited, and face coverings are required.  You must pre-register online by noon the day before the event at MaconCountyConservation.org.

Perseid Meteor Shower

View the Perseid Meteor Shower away from ambient city lights, under the dark sky at Friends Creek Conservation Area on Wednesday, August 12 at 10pm.

This popular and fantastic meteor shower appears to come from the constellation Perseus, and at its maximum you may spot about 60 meteors per hour.  Join us for this night of star gazing.  Take a glance through our telescope or bring your own.  This program is free and for all ages.  Must pre-register online by noon on August 11 at MaconCountyConservation.org.

Friends Creek Conservation Area is located at 13734 Friends Creek Park Rd., Argenta, IL.  To get to Friends Creek from Decatur, go northeast on Route 48 for 11 miles and turn left onto Friends Creek Park Road.  Parking is available.

36th Annual Astronomy Jamboree

Later in August, explore the night sky during the 36th Annual Astronomy Jamboree.  This year the event will be held at Griswold Conservation Area on Saturday, August 22 from 7-9pm.

Enjoy live music by The Red Wheelbarrows from 7:00-7:45pm, then view the stars and visible planets through telescopes.  There will be a children’s craft, giveaway prize, and pre-packaged snacks and water.  Attendees are welcome to bring their own telescopes too.  Free and for all ages.  Must pre-register online by noon on August 21 at MaconCountyConservation.org.

Griswold Conservation Area is located in Blue Mound, IL.  To get to Griswold Conservation Area from Decatur, go south on Route 48 for 12 miles, turn right onto Blue Mound Rd. and right onto Meridian Rd.  Watch for signs.  Parking is available.
