Presidential Library offers free family activities the day after Thanksgiving

A fun alternative on Black Friday

A family-friendly alternative to the stress and headaches of Black Friday shopping is returning to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

“Fun Frosty Friday” offers an array of free activities the day after Thanksgiving, including games, face-painting, a life-sized Candy Land Adventure and visits with Santa Claus.

Now in its fifth year, this free family event runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 29 in the ALPLM’s library building at 112 N. Sixth St., Springfield. Doors open at 10 a.m.

The fun includes:

  • Collecting goodies in the Peppermint Forest, Chocolate Mountain and Lollipop Woods, all part of our Life-Sized Candy Land Adventure
  • Using Civil War technology to create a coded message for Santa
  • Creating a thumbprint masterpiece in the Art Center
  • Getting a picture with Santa while he hears your requests
  • Watching a robotics demonstration by the FIRST Lego League squad from Rochester
  • Balloon art and face painting

We hope the Grinch will not keep you away as we hear he may make an appearance!

For more about the day’s fun and games, visit www.PresidentLincoln.Illinois.gov.

The ALPLM will also be collecting for the Salvation Army. Visitors can stop by the museum’s “angel tree” through Dec. 11 and pick decorations listing needed items. Then they buy the items (or make a monetary donation) and return them later.

The presidential library and museum uses a combination of rigorous scholarship and high-tech showmanship to immerse visitors in the life and times of Abraham Lincoln. The library holds an unparalleled collection of Lincoln books, documents, photographs, artifacts and art, as well as some 12 million items pertaining to all aspects of Illinois history.
