CHAMPAIGN -- Effingham St. Anthony took fourth and Effingham eighth in the John Macek Boys Golf Invitational Monday at the U of I Orange Course.
Champaign Centennial won the event with a 312 followed by Normal Community 317, Normal West 320, St. Anthony 332, Champaign St. Thomas More 333, Mattoon 333, Champaign Central 338, Effingham 341, Bismarck-Henning 344, Bloomington 351, Urbana 356, Taylorville 359, Monticello 370, Danville 374, Champaign Centennial I 384 and Judah Christian 426.
"We are definitely learning how not to give up on a round," said St. Anthony Coach Phil Zaccari. "Garrett Hixenbaugh started with a couple bogies and then actually got it back to even before an unlucky bounce let him finish at 73. Nick Wortman took a double bogie and then vowed to get under 80 and he did. This team just needs to learn how to avoid the big number and we will get there. We have finished in the top five in all of our tournaments this far. We have some time to practice and work on some things and we will see a small step. We are headed in the right direction."
Scoring for the Bulldogs were Garrett Hixenbaugh 37-36 -- 73, Nick Wortman 38-41 -- 79, Jared Hutchison 45-45 -- 90 and Sam Wortman 44-46 -- 90. Non-scorer was Jeff Niebrugge 46-46 -- 92.
Effingham was led by Callaway Smith 79, Jackson Wendling 83, Brandon Dahnke 88 and Sean Sandifer 91. Non-scorers were Reed Schafer 92 and Jake Linders 93.
"Our 341 score was pretty disappointing today," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "Today we played like a very immature team. We gave away too many strokes for no reason. We have to continue to learn from days like this to be competitive by the end of next month.
"The bright spot of the day was that Callaway Smith finished tied for seventh with a 79. Callaway's first two varsity rounds have been 73 and 79, he played incredible for us so far. Junior Brandon Dahnke also had his career low round of 88 today. We have to try to have more fun on the golf course. If we can do that, we will continue to get better each time out."
Medalist for the tourney was Centennial's Christian Khatchitorian with a 71. St. Anthony's Hixenbaugh was listed third with a 73.
