Bulldogs Win Two Invitationals, Altamont Claims Title, Area Boys, Girls Golf

Effingham St. Anthony High School captured not one, but two boys golf invitational championships during weekend play.

The Bulldogs won the Charleston Invitational Friday with a 321 stroke total. Scoring for the victory were Jonathan Willenborg 40-39 -- 79, Thomas Chojnicki 39-40 -- 79, Lane Ludwig 38-42 -- 80 and Joey Trupiano 40-43 -- 83. Also competing were Dakota Flaig 43-44 -- 87 and Charlie Wegman 45-43 -- 88.

St. Anthony was followed by Charleston #1 340, Paris 342, Mount Zion 343, Sullivan 344, Mattoon 344, Monticello 349, Effingham 354, Olney 372, Paxton-Buckley-Loda 377, Champaign St. Thomas More 379, Charleston #2 392, Champaign Centennial 406 and Danville 421. Urbana had golfers competing but not enough for a team score.

Preston Phillips from Charleston was medalist with a 73. Chojnicki finished second and Willenborg third for the Bulldogs. Trupiano rounded out the top 10.

Dakota Flaig won closest to the pin.

"It was the best round of the year for us by far," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "It was a good way to finish up."

Scoring for the Hearts were Colby Haynes 83, Ryker Schneider 88, Ethan Ritz 88 and David Splechter 95. Nick Burgess had a 97. Jett Volpi had to withdraw because of a hurt wrist.

St. Anthony then captured the championship of the Centralia Orphan Invitational Saturday.

This was a team better ball tournament with six players divided into three two-person better ball teams.

The Bulldogs tallied 222 for the win followed by Highland 225, Salem 228, Nashville 233, Centralia 239, Alton 247, Collinsville 256, Wesclin 257 and Belleville East 260. Marion, Mount Vernon, Herrin and Carbondale did not have enough for team scores.

Winning was Knackstedt/Emig of Highland with a 70. St. Anthony's Thomas Chojnicki and Jonathan Willenborg finished fourth with a 71.

Other Bulldog scores were Dakota Flaig and Joey Trupiano with a 75 and Michael Martelli and Lane Ludwig with a 76.

 

Altamont won the championship of the Hatchet Invitational.

At Windsor

Altamont claimed the championship of the Hatchet Invitational Friday.

Altamont tallied a 340 followed by Teutopolis 375, Okaw Valley 395, Newton 417, Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg 469 and Tri-County 508.

Finishing with the top three scores were Altamont's Tyler Stonecipher 77, Avery Jahraus 81 and Kevin Hall 82. Also scoring was Zack Rippetoe with a 100. Non-counters were Max Runge 104 and AJ Kopplin 110.

Scoring for second-place Teutopolis were Ethan Thoele 86, Adam Lustig 94, Hayden Jansen 96 and Peyton Tegler 99. Non-counters were Bennett Thompson and Brody Thoele with a 100 each.

"Coach Josh Forsythe did a great job of putting the invitational on," said Altamont Coach Jim Strange.

The Indians will be back in action today at Timberlake Golf Course against Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg.

At Effingham

In a dual meet Friday in girls golf, Effingham was a 184-227 winner over Teutopolis.

The Hearts were led by Mara Kirk as medalist with a 38. Also scoring were Marissa Allie 48, Ella Niebrugge 49 and Anna Hirtzel 49. Coralin Ohnesorge had a 58 and Emilie Vincent a 59.

Scoring for T-town were Abbigail Wortman and Alin Helmink with a 56 each, Josie Deters with a 57 and Molly Koester with a 58. Non-counting scores were Margaret Wente and Amy Schilling with a 64 each.

At Champaign

Effingham and Teutopolis competed in the Champaign Centennial John Macek Girls Golf Invitational Saturday.

Winning the meet was Edwardsville with 320 followed by Prospect Columbia 342, Prospect Navy 352, Normal Community 355, Belleville West 368, Mattoon 369, Effingham 373, Normal West 401, Lincoln 437, Monticello 444 and Teutopolis 445. Champaign Centennial and Bloomington did not have enough players for team scores.

Edwardsville's Nicole Johnson was medalist with a 73.

Effingham's Marah Kirk finished sixth with an 82. Also scoring for the Hearts were Ella Niebrugge 93, Anna Hirtzel 99 and Elena Niebrugge 99. Also competing were Coralin Ohnesorge 103 and Marissa Allie 107.

Scoring for Teutopolis were Abigail Wortman 105, Alaina Helmink 109, Mollie Koester 110 and Margaret Wente 121. Also competing were Josie Deters 124 and Aimee Schilling 144.
