St. Anthony Wins Boys Golf Regional, EHS Advances

Effingham St. Anthony's boys golf squad captured its own Class 1A Regional at Prairie Golf Course Tuesday.

The Bulldogs tallied 311 followed by Teutopolis 326, Mount Carmel 335, Flora 365, Marshall 368, Robinson 375, Vandalia 379, Altamont 385, Ramsey 385, Casey-Westfield 394 and Oblong 403.

T-town's Christian Deters was medalist for the event shooting a 34-35 -- 69. St. Anthony's Luke Ludwig was second with a 37-36 -- 73, Niko Dust third with 37-39 -- 76 and Dylan Ferguson tied for fourth with Mount Carmel's Blake Golden at 80 each. Ferguson had a 41-39 -- 80.

Also scoring for the Bulldogs was Trey Koester 41-41 -- 82.

Scoring for T-town along with Deters was Dylan Buenker 44-39 -- 83, Brayden Bushue 38-47 -- 85 and Keegan Meyer 41-48 -- 89.

St. Anthony, Teutopolis and Mount Carmel advance as teams. Individuals advancing were Takoda Wheeler (Robinson), Drew Woodrow (Flora), Scott Shulman (Vandalia), Noah Kopplin (Altamont), Aven Kimmel (Flora), Cameron Johnson (Oblong), Peyton Allen (Marshall), Landon Carder (Flora), Dylan Miller (Altamont) and Jordan Hosick (Cisne).

The top three teams and top 10 individuals not members of qualifying teams, will advance to the Robinson Sectional Monday at Quail Creek Country Club.

At Charleston

Charleston was the team champion at the Class 2A Charleston Regional Tuesday at the Charleston Country Club.

The Trojans tallied 311 followed by Mattoon 320, Effingham 345, Paris 349, Mount Zion 357, Olney 377 and Lawrenceville 389.

Charleston, Mattoon and Effingham advance as teams. Scoring for the Hearts were Callaway Smith 74, Jacob Sigg 86, Matt Linders 91 and Ryan Sandifer 94.

"Well, after doing this long enough you learn to appreciate any opportunity to move on," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "Before the year started, we had been to straight sectionals and we were not expecting to qualify for a sixth this year. But we are. We were fortunate to be able to advance today and we are happy about it.

"We struggled all day, but we got through it and are moving. Congrats to Callaway on a third place finish, another great round of golf."

Individuals advancing were Mitch Cremer (Decatur Lutheran), Tanner Reed (Paris), Kyle Cole (Mount Zion), John Eslinger (Paris), Nolan Tewell (Lawrenceville), Cameron Betterton (Mount Zion), Coen McDowell (Olney), Bradley Reynolds (Mount Zion), Griffin Johnson (Paris) and Seth Hatfield (Lawrenceville).

Cremer, a senior from Decatur Lutheran, was medalist with a 69.

The top three teams and top 10 individuals, not members of qualifying teams, advance to the Mattoon Sectional Tuesday at the Mattoon Golf & Country Club.

 

At Tuscola

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg competed in the Class 1A Tuscola Regional. The Hatchets finished 11th and failed to advance to sectional play.

Arcola won the regional with 329 followed by Monticello 333, Sullivan 353, Decatur St. Teresa 360, Bethany Okaw Valley 366, Villa Grove 371, Oakland 376,  Shelbyville 380, Tuscola 382, Pana 385, Windsor/Stew-Stras 426 and Macon Meridian 430.

Medalist was Sullivan's Caden Ellis, a sophomore, with a 70.

Arcola, Monticello and Sullivan advance as teams.
