Contending at this week's PGA Championship, performing well enough to qualify for the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup playoffs, even winning for the first time in more than two years -- those were subjects barely broached by Tiger Woods on Tuesday.
The four-time PGA Championship winner, who has played just nine events this year and has considerable work to do in order to qualify for the playoffs, said those immediate goals are not his focus this week at Whistling Straits.
"I'm just trying to get my game better for years to come," Woods said.
It is a somewhat surprising admission, although an understandable approach given where his game has been and the lack of success in 2015.
Woods' best finishes were a tie for 17th at the Masters and a tie for 18th two weeks ago at the Quicken Loans National. In the latter event, Woods was tied for fifth after two rounds, just three shots out of the lead, but shot a third-round 74 and fell out of contention.
Woods has not been a Sunday contender at any tournament since the 2014 WGC-Cadillac Championship -- his last event before back surgery.
