Area golf fans are buzzing after Jordan Niebrugge's record-setting first round Thursday at the British Open.

The 21-year-old Niebrugge, whose parents graduated from Teutopolis High School, shot a five-under par 67 to set an Open record for low first-round score by an amateur. Niebrugge was tied for eighth place after his record round.

Jordan teed off at 1:30am Teutopolis time, but by the time his round ended just before 6:30am, relatives and golf enthusiasts were already sharing the news about his feat.

Niebrugge's parents are Rod and Judy (Helmink) Niebrugge. They moved to St. Louis after graduation and then moved to Wisconsin where Jordan did much of his growing up. He recently completed his junior year at Oklahoma State. He is the grandson of John and Betty Helmink of Lillyville and Roger and Jackie Niebrugge of Teutopolis.

Niebrugge's round featured just 27 putts. He birdied seven holes and had two bogeys.
