Standing on the 18th green at Westchester Country Club, where legendary golfers such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Seve Ballesteros have been saluted after victory, it was Inbee Park's turn late on a pretty Sunday afternoon.
"I don't know what word can describe how I feel right now," said Park, who had just completed a virtuoso performance in the KPMG Women's PGA Championship any all-time great would have been proud of. "I just feel so thrilled and honored to be in this position."
If Park had a hard time pinning down her emotions, labeling her actions in the LPGA's second major championship of 2015 isn't difficult. Sublime. Comanding. Awesome. Dominating. Take your pick, but it should come not with a golf clap but a standing ovation.
Want a simple measure of Park's talent? She is 26 and has now won six majors. Rory McIlroy, her counterpart as No. 1 in the men's game now that she has leapfrogged Lydia Ko after this week, is 26 and owns four. For a golfer who is steadily building one of those careers that could resonate long after she has retired, this was one of those weeks why.
Park closed with a 5-under 68 to finish at 19-under 273, matching the low 72 holes in a major championship in relation to par for women or men. Dottie Pepper (1999 Nabisco Dinah Shore), Karen Stupples (2004 Women's British Open), Cristie Kerr (2010 LPGA Championship) and Yani Tseng (2011 LPGA Championship) have shot that figure as has Tiger Woods (2000 Open Championship).
