Effingham High School captured the championship of the St. Anthony Boys Golf Invitational at Fox Prarie in Windsor Monday.

Effingham won with a score of 312 followed by St. Anthony 321, Kankakee Bishop McNamara 434, Collinsville 356, McLeansboro 323, Greenville 347, Murphysboro 372, Robinson 344, Decatur St. Teresa 438, Champaign St. Thomas More 338, Sullivan 446, Teutopolis 376 and Tuscola 344.

Medalist was Effingham's Jackson Wendling with a 72.

"This was a really good start to our season," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "Jackson played a great back 9, with a 2-under-par on that side. We made up 10 shots on the tougher side and that was the difference in the tournament. Callaway had a good round of 76, he is awfully good for only being a sophomore and our two seniors, Jake Linders and Sean Sandifer, had good rounds to complete our counting scores. We had three scores in the 70s which will be key for us all year."

Scoring for the Hearts were Wendling with a 38-34 -- 72, Callaway Smith with a 37-39 -- 76 for an eighth-place finish, Jake Linders with a 39-40 -- 79, Sean Sandifer with a 44-41 -- 85, Reed Schafer with a 42-53 -- 95, Ryan Sandifer with a 47-45 -- 92, Brandon Dahnke with a 51-45 -- 96 and Matt Linders with a 56-52 -- 108.

Scoring for the second place Bulldogs were Garrett Hixenbaugh 37-39 -- 76, Connor Greene 37-38 -- 75, Sam Wortman 41-43 -- 84, Jared Hutchison 42-44 -- 86, Nate Schmidt 47-45 -- 92 and Jeff Niebrugge 49-46 -- 95.

"Congratulations to Coach Schafer and the Hearts on an impressive win," said St. Anthony Coach Phil Zaccari. "They played very well today.

"We played fairly well but had too many big numbers. It is a good start to the season and something we can build on. Connor and Garrett had good rounds to help pace us. Sam came through and finished solid. Jared had a couple tough breaks but battled through them."

Finishing in the top five were Wendling (EHS), Chris Tate (St. Thomas More) 73, Landon Vaughn (Hamilton County) 74, Luke Baker (Neoga) 75, Seth Icenogle (Tuscola) 75, Dylan Miley (Murphysboro) 75, Jon O'Daniel (Hamilton County) 75 and Connor Greene (St. Anthony) 75.

St. Anthony had a second team and scoring were Niko Dust 49-48 -- 97, Jacob Schmidt 46-52 -- 98, Mitchell Sager 57-55 -- 112, Trey Koester 52-61 -- 113 and Augie Heal 65-65 -- 130.
