Giants Earn First Win Over Vikings

(East Rutherford, NJ) -- It wasn't pretty, but the New York Giants picked up their first victory of the season beating the Minnesota Vikings, 23-7, on "Monday Night Football" at MetLife Stadium. Giants quarterback Eli Manning says they are happy to finally have a win under their belt.

Peyton Hillis had 81 total yards and a rushing touchdown while Manning threw for 200 yards and a TD. New York forced three turnovers and improved to 1-and-6. In his first start for Minnesota, Josh Freeman completed 20-of-53 passes for 190 yards and an interception. Adrian Peterson was held to 28 yards on 13 carries. Marcus Sherels returned a punt 86 yards for a score for Minnesota, which fell to 1-5.

 

Tennessee Titans Owner Bud Adams Dead At 90

(Nashville, TN) -- Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams is dead at the age of 90. The Texas oilman was the oldest owner in the NFL, a few months ahead of Buffalo Bills' owner Ralph Wilson. Adams bought the Houston Oilers in 1960 and moved the now-named Titans franchise to Tennessee in 1997.

 

Bears Lose Cutler, Briggs To Injury

(Lake Forest, IL) -- The Chicago Bears are dealing with a couple of key injuries following Sunday's 45-41 loss to the Washington Redskins.  Quarterback Jay Cutler will miss at least four weeks with a groin injury while linebacker Lance Briggs is expected to miss six weeks with a fractured shoulder. Head coach Marc Trestman says the good news is that both will return this season.

Cutler was 3-of-8 for 28 yards and an interception before leaving in the second quarter. Josh McCown came on in relief and completed 14-of-20 passes for 204 yards and a touchdown. The loss dropped the Bears to 4-3 on the season. Chicago's next game is at Green Bay on Monday, November 4.

The Bears have signed quarterback Jordan Palmer to serve as a backup. The former Bengals QB will be the backup behind Josh McCown, who is taking over as starter for the injured Jay Cutler. Palmer has played in just four games in his NFL career, which started in 2008.

Redskins safety Brandon Meriweather has been suspended two games for his actions in Sunday's game against the Bears. Meriweather was flagged twice for personal fouls in the game. He was called for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Alshon Jeffery and for launching at Brandon Marshall.

 

Colts' Wayne Out With Torn ACL

(Indianapolis, IN) -- Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL in his right knee. He was hurt on a non-contact play while trying to catch a low pass from Andrew Luck in the fourth quarter of the Colts' 39-33 win over the Denver Broncos. Head coach Chuck Pagano says this injury will not end Wayne's career.

The 34-year-old veteran was leading the Colts with 38 receptions and 503 yards in seven games. His streak of 189 consecutive games, longest among active players, will come to an end.

 

Wade Phillips: Tough To Take Bum Phillips' Death

(Houston, TX) -- Houston Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips is admitting to having a hard time dealing with the death of his father, legendary Oilers coach Bum Phillips.

Bum Phillips passed away Friday from a long illness at his ranch in Goliad. A memorial service is planned for this Saturday at Goliad High School, with a second service at Lakewood Church on October 29. That will feature former coaches and players from the "Luv Ya Blue" era.  Bum Phillips died three days before the man who fired him, Bud Adams, passed away.

 

Illinois Turns Focus To Michigan State

(Champaign, IL) -- Illinois is still in search of its first Big Ten win. Last week's 56-32 loss to Wisconsin dropped the Illini to 0-2 in conference with a 3-3 overall mark. Illinois will host Michigan State this Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

 

Northwestern To Play Iowa Without Mark

(Evanston, IL) -- Northwestern will be without running back Venric Mark for this week's game against Iowa. Wildcats head coach Pat Fizgerald says Mark is dealing with an ankle injury. Kain Colter remains listed as NU's starting quarterback. The Wildcats have lost their first three Big Ten games and are 4-3.

 

Grambling State Players Agree To Finish Season

(Grambling, LA) -- Grambling State football players are ending their boycott. The "Shreveport Times" reports the team is ending its six-day walkout and will finish the season. The Tigers forfeited Saturday's game at Jackson State after players refused to travel for the game.  Grambling is 0-8 and on its third head coach.
