EHS JV Football Team Downs Mattoon

MATTOON -- Effingham traveled to Mattoon and secured a hard fought 14-7 victory over host Mattoon in junior varsity football competition Monday.
Effingham used a solid ground attack led by Alex Howell who gained 145 yards on 20 carries. Mattoon got on the scoreboard first, scoring a touchdown on a four yard run and the extra point was good. Effingahm used all but 24 seconds of the second quarter, going 70 yards for a score. Grant Wolfe hit Joe Nieman in the right flat and Joe travel seven yards for the touchdown. Then Wolfe hit Blake White on a pass over the middle for the two point conversion. This gave the Hearts a 8-7 lead going into halftime.
The Hearts put together another long drive to start the third quarter which was capped off by a three yard run by Zach Kahley but failed on the extra point. The teams played a scoreless fourth, however Mattoon was threatening until Tucker Denton intercepted a pass on the goal line to stop Mattoon's drive and secure the victory.
Effingham improves to 3-1 on the season and will host Mt. Zion next Monday night.
