Effingham evened its junior varsity football record to 1-1 with an 18-14 victory over Charleston Monday evening.

Effingham jumped out to an 18-0 lead by halftime with touchdowns by Joe Nieman of three and four yards and one by Alex Howell of eight yards. EHS was unable to convert any extra point opportunities.

Charleston came back with two touchdowns in the second half but it wasn't enough to overcome Effingham's strong first half. Howell led the Hearts attack with 10 carries for 114 yards. Trevor Rieman led the Hearts on defense with nine tackles. Tucker Denton had an interception.

EHS returns to action next Monday at Salem.
