Paxton-Buckley-Loda handed the Effingham Hearts their second straight loss while posting their second straight win as they defeated the Hearts in high school football Friday night, 18-12.  The game at Klosterman Field was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.  Watch later this weekend for a video replay of the game on the website.

Effingham took its first lead of the game when Matt Wohltman recovered a fumble at the PBL 27-yard line and ran it in for a touchdown.  The score with 10:40 remaining in the first quarter gave Effingham a 6-0 lead.

PBL bounced right back, though, staging a three-play, 69-yard drive that was culminated by a three-yard touchdown run by Drew Schrodt, who was a thorn in the Hearts' side all night.  The kick made it 7-6 PBL and the Hearts never regained the lead.

There was no further scoring until PBL scored 11 points in the final 34 seconds of the first half.  PBL capped a nine-play, 59-yard drive on a nine-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Weston Weber to Schrodt.  PBL completed a two-point conversion pass and the Panthers led 15-6.  The Hearts then gave the ball back to PBL on the Effingham 32.  Four plays later, kicker Jordan Kietzman missed a field goal try with six seconds left before the half, but missed.  However, an Effingham player was called for a personal foul, giving Kietzman a shot at redemption.  Kietzman made the kick this time, after officials put one second back on the clock since the half can't end on a defensive penalty.

The only scoring in the second half was when Effingham completed a three-play, 66-yard drive highlighted by Zach Miller's 22-yard touchdown run with 5:47 remaining to account for the final score.

The Hearts picked up their rushing attack this week, improving from 48 yards on the ground last week to this week's total of 99 yards.  Zach Miller led the way with 114 yards on 17 carries.  Quarterback Kevin Daugherty's total of -39 yards rushing put a hole in the Hearts' total.  Travis Durbin carried the ball four times for 12 yards, Billy Arndt rushed once for seven yards, Tyler Myers carried once for four yards, and Trent Barnhart carried once for one yard.

Daugherty had a rougher night than the week before.  The junior attempted 14 passes and completed five for 131 yards, but also threw two second half interceptions.  Five players each had a grab; Dylan Wolff for 46 yards, Carter Hayes for 45 yards, Matt Wohltman for 26 yards, Billy Arndt for 11 yards, and Marcus Robinson for three yards.

PBL was led by Drew Schrodt with 192 yards rushing on 30 carries and with 102 yards receiving, as he caught all five of Weston Weber's pass completions. Schrodt also punted four times for 131 yards and intercepted a pass.

PBL racked up 433 total net yards to 230 total net yards for Effingham.  PBL ran 69 plays to 44 for Effingham.

Kevin Daugherty punted twice for 62 yards while Michael Carie punted twice for 69 yards.  Carie had three kickoffs for 154 yards.  Zach Miller had two kickoff returns for 64 yards.

Here's the tackle totals: Travis Durbin--16 including six solos...Griffin Paige--13...Billy Arndt--11 including five solos...Drew Vasquez--nine including four solos...Brandon Loy--eight including four solos...Blaine Koester--six including one solo...Zach Miller--five including one solo...Carter Hayes--five...Payton Bushue--four including three solos...Matt Wohltman--four...Noah Hagen--four including three solos...Marcus Robinson--two...Trent Barnhart--two...Wyatt Kahley--one (a solo).
