Effingham High School whipped Salem 42-14 in freshman football action Thursday at Klosterman Field.

Effingham stepped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead and led 30-0 at halftime. The Hearts tallied a touchdown in the third quarter and a final touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Alex Howell was a machine for the Hearts, scoring five touchdowns. Howell scored two in the opening quarter, one in the second period and the final two in the third and fourth quarters. Howell took a kickoff return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. He carried the ball six times for a whopping 242 yards.

Joeseph Nieman connected on five of six passes for eight yards. Tucker Denton pulled in a pass in the second quarter for a touchdown.

Drew Vasquez caried the ball 10 times for 41 yards while Alex Ramos had two carries for seven yards.

Nieman had five solo tackles and six assists to lead the Hearts defensively. Max Habbe had a fumble recovery. Caleb Martin and Tucker Denton had a quarterback sack each.
