Centralia edges Effingham in Freshman Football Action

Centralia edged Effingham 34-30 in freshman football action Thursday evening at Klosterman Field.

Effingham took a 16-6 opening quarter lead but Centralia scored two touchdowns in the second quarter to lead 20-16 at halftime. Both teams tallied a touchdown in the third quarter and Centralia held a 26-22 lead. In the final period, Effingham scored a touchdown with an extra point run but so did Centralia.

Joe Nieman connected on five of 10 passes for 62 yards plus ran the ball 11 times for 33 yards and a touchdown. Drew Vasquez pulled in two passes for 20 yards and a touchdown. Vasquez also had 14 carries for 63 yards and a touchdown. Alex Howell had 16 carries for 127 yards and a touchdown.

Vasquez also was tough defensively with two solo tackles and three assists.
