ROBINSON -- Newton High School claimed the championship of the Robinson Boys Cross Country Meet Thursday.

The Eagles tallied 40 followed by Tolono Unity 88, Effingham 88, Father McGivney 138, Marshall 156, Fairfield 161, Robinson 165, Cumberland 194, St. Anthony 208, Carmi 254, Dieterich 217, Charleston 393 and Mattoon 413. Altamont, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, North Clay (Louisville), Teutopolis, Lawrenceville, Mount Carmel, Oblong/Palestine/Hutsonville and Casey-Westfield had runners competing but not enough for team scores.

Fairfield's Chase Smith finished first with a time of 16:00.20. Newton then took the next two spots as Luke Weber finished in 16:07.67 and Clay Bergbower in 16:10.44. Also scoring for the Eagles were Nick Shamhart ninth in 16:40.46, Owen Mahaffey 10th in 16:43.55 and Luis Zavala 17th in 17:12.40.

Effingham had two runners in the top 10. Andrew Donaldson took fifth in 16:16.62 while Garrett Wagoner was seventh in 16:22.09.

In the girls meet, Tolono Unity won the team title with 30 points followed by Father McGivney 83, Effingham 87, Newton 108, Robinson 111, Fairfield 174, Marshall 187, St. Anthony 188, Mattoon 213, Neoga 264 and Charleston 278. No scoring but having runners were Altamont, Dieterich, North Clay, Teutopolis, Carmi, Lawrenceville, Mount Carmel, Paris and Casey-Westfield.

Father McGivney captured the top two spots as Elena Rybak won in 17:21.41 and Kaitlyn Hatley took second in 17:58.22. But Tolono Unity won the team title on the strength of five runners placing in the top 10.

The top area runner was Effingham's Jessica Larsen fifth in 18:45.76. Newton's Layna Marshall was eighth in 19:13.74.
