Newton Finishes 13th, Area Runners At C.C. State

PEORIA -- Newton High School finished 13th out of 30 teams competing in the Class 1A State Cross Country Meet Saturday at Detweiller Park in Peoria.

The Eagles tallied 362. Winning the State title was Chicago Latin with 165.

Competing for the Eagles were Nick Zwilling 73rd in 16:19.14, Luke Weber 103rd in 16:31.25, Clay Bergbower 109th in 16:34.66, Owen Mahaffey 110th in 16:35.21, Luis Zavala 138th in 16:50.41, Nick Shamhart 183rd in 17:13.94 and Ben Street 217th in 17:45.14.

Winning the individual titles was Ryder James of Paxton-Buckley-Loda in 14:16.89. There were 260 runners competing.

Also from Newton competing was Rylea Borgic in the Class 1A Girls State Meet. Borgic captured 21st place in 18:23.83. There were 256 runners taking part in the girls meet.

Winning the state individual title was Lianna Surtz of Aurora Rosary in 17:21.45.

Effingham High School's Jessica Larsen competed in the Class 2A State Girls Meet. Larsen finished 109th out of 236 runners in 19:18.03. 

Winning the 2A girls individual title was Ava Parekh of Chicago Latin in 16:23.88.
