Newton Boys Team, Girl; St. A Boy, EHS Girl Advance To C.C. State

Newton High School's boys cross country team advanced to the State Cross Country Meet while Newton's Rylea Borgic also advanced along with Effingham St. Anthony's Griffen Elder and Effingham's Jessica Larsen.

In the Class 1A Decatur St. Teresa Sectional, Newton captured fifth place as a team with the top six teams advancing to State.

Winning the sectional was Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond with 75 followed by St. Jospeh-Ogden 87, Monticello 144, Decatur St. Teresa 152, Newton 160 and Shelbyville 200. Those top six teams advance. They were followed by Tuscola 217, Bismarck-Henning-Rossville 221, Paxton-Buckley-Loda 235, Urbana University 267, Tolono Unity 316, Heyworth 316, Georgetown Notre Dame 335, Robinson 375, Clinton 390, Fairfield 391, Salem 398, Broadlands Heritage 400, Effingham St. Anthony 410 and Cumberland 473.

Winning the individual title was Paxton-Buckley-Loda's Ryder James with a time of 15:24.17. The top 10 individuals not members of qualifying teams advanced to State.

Newton's Nick Zwilling was 24th with a time of 17:10.96. Also scoring for the Eagles were Clay Bergbower 32nd n 17:24.28, Owen Mahaffey 34th in 17:28.05, Luke Weber 36th in 17:32.21 and Luis Zavala 44th in 17:41.51.

Griffen Elder was the top finisher for the area schools. Elder took 20th place with a time of 17:07.65.

In the girls meet, Tolono Unity was the team champion with 57 points followed by St. Joseph-Ogden 90, Monticello 108, Urbana University 109, Robinson 164 and Marshall 178. Those six teams advance and were followed by Cilnton 181, Newton 231, Shelbyville 249, Champaign St. Thomas More 286, Paxton-Bukcley-Loda 302, Fithian Oakwood 343, Argenta-Oreana 429, Tuscola 436, Decatur St. Teresa 456, Efifngham St. Anthony 459, Salem 462, Neoga 473, Villa Grove 483, Dieterich 485 and Paris 517.

The winning individual was Urbana University's Kate Ahmari with a time of 18:05.09.

Borgic finished 17th with a time of 19:53.93. The top 10 individuals not members of qualifying teams advance.

In the Class 2A Decatur MacArthur Sectional, the Effingham girls team competed and finished 15th with 348 points. Chatham Glenwood won the title with 54 followed by Mascoutah 116, Mount Zion 138, Waterloo 156, Mahomet-Seymour 171 and Highland 175. Those top six teams advance. Following them were Troy Triad 203, Springfield 223, Rochester 269, Champaign Central 274, Urbana 290, Champaign Centennial 300, Bethalto Civic Memorial 317, Linclon 344, Effingham, Carbondale 361, Taylorville 426 and Charleston 260.

Effingham's Jessica Larsen finished 14th with a time of 19:53.61 and advances as an individual.

In the boys meet, Mahomet-Seymour won with 61 points followed in the top six by Springfield 93, Marion 174, Urbana 189, Mount Zion 206 and Highland 209. Following the qualifiers were Champaigm Central 221, Taylorville 229, Mount Vernon 237, Chatham Glenwood 268, Bethalto Civiic Memorial 288, Mascoutah 294, Carbondale 301, Rochester 302, Lincoln 333, Olney 337, Waterloo 340 and Mattoon 383.

Winning the individual title was Alex Partlow of Carbondale in 14:57.02. Effingham had two runners competing, Andrew Donaldson who finished 45th in 17:25.85 and Garrett Wagoner 85th in 18:10.50.

The Class 1A State will be held Saturday, November 6 at Detweiller Park in Peoria with the girls running at 9 a.m. and the boys at 10 a.m. The Class 2A State Meet will be held Saturday with the girls competing at 11 a.m. and the boys at noon.
