Keller Earns Cross Country Runner of Year Honor

Anna Sophia Keller wins the Illinois Gatorade Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year


School: St. Anthony (Effingham, Ill.) Grade: Freshman Position: Distance runner Height: 5-foot

Athletic achievement: She raced to the Class 1A individual state championship this past season with a meet-record time of 16:35. Keller also won sectional and regional titles, and broke course records at the Shelbyville Trail Invitational, the Tuscola Classic, the Chrisman Cow Chip Classic, the Cumberland Invitational, the Robinson Invitational and the St. Anthony Bulldog Invitational. She finished sixth at the Nike Cross Nationals Midwest Regional championships in 18:59.3.

Academic excellence: Keller has maintained an A average.

Exemplary character: A member of her school's Spanish Club, she has volunteered as a cantor and lector at Sacred Heart Church.


"Anna Sophia surprised me this year because I thought she would need time to adjust to running three miles," said St. Anthony head coach Kevin Wiedman. "She broke a course record at every meet she ran during the season. I was proud of the way she was able to stay focused during her first year."  

THE FUTURE: Keller will be a sophomore this fall.
