WSS Nabs Two Victories, Neoga, Altamont Win In Girls Basketball

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg High School handed Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City a 44-40 National Trail Conference girls basketball loss Friday.
WSS ran off to a 17-7 opening quarter lead and held that 10-point lead at halftime, 22-12. The two teams played to 7-7 in the third period before CHBC made a comeback bid with a 21-15 run only to fall short.
Mikala Nichols and Hannah Hayes provided the one-two scoring punch for the Hatchets with 18 and 17 points respectively.. Nichols hit eight field goals and was two of two at the line while Hayes connected on four field goals, one a three-pointer, and eight of nine at the line.
The Bobcats were led by Gracie Heckert with 13 points on five field goals that included three trifectas. Heckert also led in rebounds with 11 while Carsen Burks had seven. Sydney Lorton and Madison Wojcik had two steals each. Burks had three assists.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City lost a Saturday non-conference contest to Nokomis, 60-50.
Nokomis held a 27-18 halftime lead and had a slight 33-32 second half edge.
CHBC was led by Mackenzie Bunch with 15 points on four field goals and seven of 10 at the line. Carsen Burks chipped in with 12 and Gracie Heckert 11. Heckert had nine rebounds and four steals while Bunch had seven rebounds. Carsen Burks had four steals and three assists.
Nokomis also nabbed the junior varsity contest, 25-18.

The Hatchets held a 21-10 halftime lead and had a 27-19 second half.

Neoga High School remained unbeaten with a 57-33 non-conference win over Martinsville Saturday.
The Indians trailed Martinsville 12-10 after the opening quarter but took the game in hand with a 22-8 second quarter run.
Kylee Phillips led eight players in scoring with 15 points.
Sydney Richards had six rebounds. Avery Fearday had six steals and five assists.

At Altamont
Altamont tallied a 78-62 win over Vandalia in a non-conference matchup Saturday.
The Indians stepped out to a 22-15 opening quarter lead behind Grace Nelson's nine, Brooke Runge's six and Remi Miller's five points.
Altamont led 33-25 at halftime and 59-41 going into the final quarter.
Nelson finished with 32 points on 12 field goals and eight of nine at the line. Runge tallied 22 on nine field goals that included three trifectas and one of one at the line.
Altamont finished with eight three-pointers as Runge had three, Peyton Osteen and Miller two each. The Indians hit 10 of 14 free throws while Vandalia was 17 of 19 at the line.

North Clay edged out to an 8-7 opening quarter lead behind the scoring of Miah Ballard with all eight points.
Flora came back with a 15-9 second period to lead 22-17 at halftime. The Wolves held a 31-26 lead going into the final period and had a 16-14 run.
North Clay was led by Madi Lovett with 13 and Ballard with 10.
