As they've done over and over again, Teutopolis High School's defense took out the state's leading scorer and went on to defeat Mount Carmel 49-31 Thursday night to capture the Class 2A Casey-Westfield Girls Basketball Sectional championship.

Coach Dennis Koester installed the defense that makes grown players cry and Coach Lori Thompson has continued that defense as her team held the state's leading scorer, Tyra Buss to 15 points. Buss, who has already signed to play for Indiana University, averages 46 points a contest and is well over 4,000 points in her career. But that high school career came to a close as T-town simply wouldn't let her take control.

Mount Carmel edged out to a 10-9 opening quarter lead as Buss tallied six of those points. Cierra Thompson led the Wooden Shoes by connecting on a basket and three free throws.

T-town then started to edge ahead in the second period, outscoring Mount Carmel 11-7 for a 20-17 halftime lead. Madeline Hartke knocked in three baskets for six points for the Shoes. Buss did not score in the quarter.

Then it was time for the Shoes to say goodbye. Thompson connected on three baskets, including a three-pointer, for eight points and four other players knocked in baskets. T-town's defense held Buss to two baskets and the Shoes ripped off a 21-9 run to lead 41-26 going into the final quarter.

From there it was just maintenance. Hartke hit six points and the Shoes had a slight 8-5 edge but the damage had been done.

Hartke tallied 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Shoes while Thompson scored 18. Buss, named Illinois Ms. Basketball last season, finished with 15 points.

It was the fourth straight year T-town has taken out Mount Carmel.

T-town moved into the Elite Eight and now sports a 27-5 record. The Shoes will take on Breese Central Monday. The Cougars improved to 31-0 with a 47-24 win over Nashville at the West Frankfort Sectional.  Game time will be 8 p.m. at Salem High School.

Also in the Elite Eight are Riverton who will take on Champaign St. Thomas More at the Decatur Super-Sectional Monday, Prophetstown who will face El Paso at the Monmouth Super-Sectional and Elmhurst IC Catholic who will face either South Holland Seton Academy or Lemont Mount Assisi Monday at the River Forest Super-Sectional.
