Altamont High School claimed a 70-63 National Trail Conference barn-burner win over Effingham St. Anthony at the Enlow Center Tuesday evening before a large crowd. It was a historical win for the Indians, as it was the first time that Altamont has won at St. Anthony, be it the old gym or at the current facility, since 1986.

The Bulldogs edged out to a 16-13 opening quarter lead. Both players had even scoring as seven players scored for St. Anthony and six for Altamont.

In the second period, Altamont pushed into high gear, ripping out to a 37-26 halftime lead. Garrett Ziegler went on a rampage, knocking down a three-pointer, two regular baskets and two free throws for nine points while Derek Jahraus tallied five and Justin McGinnis and Aaron Goeckner four each.

Then in the third quarter, Altamont had a slight 15-14 edge to lead 52-40 going into the final quarter. Ziegler continued his hot scoring with nine more points.

Then it was St. Anthony's turn to get on a hot streak. The Bulldogs outscored Altamont 23-18 in the final period only to fall short. Matt Gibson scored seven and John Goeckner led the way with eight. But the Indians' Ziegler connected on five points from the field and hit all six of his free throw attempts.

Ziegler finished with 32 points and was the lone Altamont player in double digits. Aaron Goeckner added nine.

St. Anthony was led by three players in double figures. Goeckner tallied 14, while Gibson added 13 and Neil Williams put in 11.

With the win, Coach John Niebrugge (pictured below talking to our Greg Sapp on the post game show) becomes the first Altamont coach since the 1940s to win at least 20 games in his first two seasons.
