St. Anthony vs. Altamont for Regional Championship

The St. Anthony Lady Bulldogs and the Altamont Lady Indians will square off Thursday for the championship of the Altamont 1A Regional Tournament.

Both teams posted come-from-behind wins in semifinal games Wednesday night.  St. Anthony defeated Ramsey 56-45 while Altamont came from nine down at the start of the fourth quarter to beat Brownstown/St. Elmo 39-36.  Both games were heard on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com, as will the championship game Thursday at 7pm.

St. Anthony got down early against the scrappy Lady Rams and still trailed 11-9 at the end of the first quarter.  The Lady Bulldogs finally took their first lead with 3:32 left in the second quarter and were up 22-20 at halftime.  Foul problems plagued Ramsey in the second half.  St. Anthony outscored Ramsey 18-11 in the third quarter to lead 40-31 and outpointed the Rams in the fourth quarter 16-14 to account for the 11-point win.

St. Anthony made 47% of its shots, hitting 21 of 45.  The Bulldogs were 13 of 23 on foul shots, committed 16 turnovers, grabbed 29 rebounds and made just one of six three-point attempts.

Ramsey made 18 of 47 shots for 38%, made four of six foul shots, turned the ball over 19 times and pulled down 21 rebounds while making five of 18 three pointers.

Kate Richards led St. Anthony with 19 points on her 18th birthday while Megan Nuxoll had a monster game with 18 points and 18 rebounds.  Lauren Wendt was in double figures with 10 points, Morgan Gardewine scored five points and Hunter Niebrugge scored four points.

Kayla Zimmerman with 20 points and Kate Joliff with 17 points led Ramsey.

St. Anthony posted their 20th win of the season against seven losses, while Ramsey ends its season at 6-8.  It's St. Anthony's first 20-win season for Coach Bart Wiedman and the second for the program overall.

Altamont and Brownstown/St. Elmo both had terrible times getting shots to drop in the second game, but Altamont found enough offense to outscore BSE 13-1 in the fourth quarter to come from nine down at the start of the fourth quarter to win by three.

Brownstown/St. Elmo led 14-11 after one quarter, 20-18 at halftime, and 35-26 after three quarters, but then Altamont went to work.  Madison Ohnesorge carried the water for Altamont in the fourth period, scoring 10 of Altamont's 13 points.

Both teams hit just 24% of its shots, BSE 14 of 59 and Altamont 14 of 58.  BSE made just four of 10 foul shots, Altamont eight of 13.  BSE committed 21 turnovers to 16 for Altamont, and Altamont outrebounded BSE 43-35.  Brownstown/St. Elmo made five of 15 three-pointers, while Altamont hit just three of 14.

Madison Ohnesorge led Altamont with 20 points.  Renee Tillman scored just five points, but grabbed 18 rebounds and blocked at least six shots.  Also for Altamont: Lauren Ohnesorge and Macy Wendling four points each, and Lily Laatsch, Chandra Smith and Brooke Burns two points apiece.

Molly Hill and Morgan Brown each scored 10 points to lead Brownstown/St. Elmo.  Also for BSE: Dani Austin and Audriana Pruett each scored five points, Gabi Moore four points and Kyrstyn Fitch two points.

Brownstown/St. Elmo finishes the season 15-10 and says goodbye to seniors Molly Hill, Bethany Oberlink, Dani Austin, and Michaela Walk.

Altamont improved to 12-11 on the campaign.
