South Central Wins Opening Regional Game, Area Girls Roundup

Several area teams saw their seasons come to an end while South Central picked up a win as regionals began across the state for girls basketball.

Class 1A Altamont Regional

Dieterich fell to Ramsey in opening round play of the Altamont Regional, 61-54.

Ramsey stepped out to a 18-9 opening quarter lead but Dieterich pulled back within 28-22 at halftime. The Movin' Maroons still trailed by six going into the final quarter when Ramsey had a 20-19 edge.

Ramsey was led by Kate Jolliff with 31 points and Kayla Zimmerman with 12. Joliff connected on seven of 11 free throws and hit 11 field goals including two three-ponters.

Dieterich was led by Mallorie Vahling with 18, Courtney Flach with 17 and Kallee Rae Heuerman w ith 14. Vahling had a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds. She also had six assists and five steals. The Maroons end the season with a 10-16 record.

The regional continues Wednesday evening as Ramsey advances to meet Effingham St. Anthony at 6 p.m. The second game features St. Elmo/Brownstown against Altamont at 8 p.m.

Class 2A Vandalia Regional

Vandalia ended Newton's season in the Vandalia Regional Monday evening, 47-39.

Vandalia edged out to a 10-9 opening quarter lead and led 22-20 at hafltime. The Vandals then had a 9-5 third quarter run and outscored the Eagles by two points in the final period.

Hosick tallied 14 for the winners. Newton was led by Kerner with nine points. The Eagles end the season with a 12-14 record.

The regional continues today with Teutopolis taking on Vandalia at 6 p.m. followed by Greenville against Flora at 8.

Class 1A Red Hill (Bridgeport) Regional

South Central went overtime before edging Oblong 51-47 in opening round play of the Red Hill Regional Monday evening.

The two teams were tied at 43-43 sending the game into overtime where the Cougars outscored Oblong 8-4 to pull out the victory, only its second one of the season.

Abby Hahn tallied 22 points for the winners. The Cougars are now 2-20 on the season and will face North Clay (Louisville) at 6 p.m. today while Red Hill takes on Palestine/Hutsonville at 8.

Class 1A Cumberland Regional

Kansas and Okaw Valley picked up victories in opening round play of the Cumberland Regional.

Kansas downed Martinsville 53-26 in the first game of the evening. In the second contest, Okaw Valley downed Cumberland 60-30.

Okaw Valley held the Pirates scoreless in the opening quarter and led 27-12 at halftime. McClain tallied 20 for the winners while Harlin chipped in with 13 and M. Dash 12.

Cumberland was led by Poe with 12 points and Grissom with eight.

The regional continues tonight with Arcola facing Kansas at 6 and Neoga taking on Okaw Valley at 8.

One game was played in the Nokomis Regional Monday evening. Kincaid South Fork claimed a 51-39 win over Pawnee.

The regional continues tonight with Moweaqua Central A&M facing Kincaid South Fork at 6 followed by Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City against Nokomis at 8.
