EHS Wins Own Girls Tournament

Effingham High School and Neoga picked up wins at the 13th Annual Effingham Girls Round Robin Basketball Tournament Wednesday evening. With the victory, EHS won its own championship with a 3-0 record.

In the opener, Neoga defeated Dieterich 59-44. Neoga edged out to a 7-4 first quarter lead then pushed that to 25-15 at halftime. The Indians had a 20-12 third period run.

Jillian Deters tallied 20 points and went over 1,000 points in her career. Also in double figures were Elecia Thies with 14, Madison Butler with 12 and Jaycie Roy with 10. The Indians improve to 14-7.

Dieterich was led by Mallorie Vahling with 14 and Courtney Flach with 11. Rachel Schmidt pulled down eight rebounds. Flach had five assists while Vahling led in steals with six. The Maroons drop to 5-10.

Iin the second contest, Effingham pushed its tournament record to 3-0 and its overall mark to 21-0 on the season with a 44-32 win over Centralia (2-1). The Hearts have one game left as well as Centralia but even if the Orphan Annies win and improve to 3-1 and EHS loses and drops to 3-1, the Hearts have wonthe title  because they have already beaten Centralia.

The Hearts took a 27-22 halftime lead then had a 10-2 third period run to put the game on ice.

Josie Zerrusen tallied 11 and Lauren Stephenson 10. Caitlin Kaufman and Stephanie Robb scored eight each.

Tonight's games feature St. Anthony against Neoga at 6:15 and Effingham taking on Dieterich at 7:45.
