Hearts Impressive in Win Over St. A; Altamont Falls To Greenville

The Effingham Lady Hearts pushed their undefeated record to 20-0 Tuesday with a convincing win over the St. Anthony Lady Bulldogs, 46-15 in a battle of crosstown rivals.

The contest at the Effingham Girls Round Robin Tournament was heard on KJ Country 102.3 and our Live Streaming.

Effingham led the game start-to-finish and held St. Anthony to seven baskets in the process.  The Bulldogs shot 19%, making seven of 36 shots.  Meanwhile, the Hearts made 18 of 35 shots, or 51%.  Effingham made seven of 11 foul shots while St. Anthony missed both of the only free throws they shot in the contest.  The Hearts committed just six turnovers to 16 for the Bulldogs.  Each team grabbed 18 rebounds.  St. Anthony made one of 11 three-point shots while Effingham made three of 10 from three-point land.

Effingham led 9-4 after the first quarter and extended the lead to 20-9 at halftime.  It was 33-13 Hearts after three periods before Effingham outscored the Bulldogs 13-2 in the fourth quarter.

Effingham featured balanced scoring as Josie Zerrusen led with 11 points, Caitlin Kaufman scored 10 points, Stephanie Robb scored nine points, Jantzen Michael scored six, Brittany Beals four, Maddy Field three, Marranda Steffen two and Lauren Stephenson one.

Only three St. Anthony players scored; Megan Nuxoll led the way with eight points, Kate Richards scored five points and Lexie Niebrugge added two points.

Effingham is 2-0 in the tournament, while St. Anthony is 0-2 in tourney play and 13-6 on the season.

In the other contest, Centralia took a last-second lead to edge Dieterich 50-49. Dieterich held the lead throughout the contest. The Movin' Maroons led 14-6 after the opening quarter and 25-21 at halftime. Dieterich was still in control after the third period, leading 40-33.

But the Orphan Annies came back with a 17-9 final quarter run to pull out the one-point victory. Holtkamp tallied 23 and Mays 17 for the winners.

Dieterich was led by Flach and Vahling with 14 each and Schmidt with 11.

Tonight at the Effingham Tourney: Dieterich vs. Neoga at 6:15pm, Effingham vs. Centralia at 7:45pm.  Effingham and Centralia go into the second game both 2-0 in the tournament.

At Altamont

Greenville came calling and downed Altamont 64-34. Greenville jumped out to a 24-5 opening quarter lead and it was over for the Indians.

Alderman led the winners with 19 points while Schreiber and Gatson scored 10 each.

Altamont was led by M. Ohnesorge with 16.
