The Effingham Hearts remained undefeated in the Apollo Conference basketball race with a 39-19 win over the Salem Wildcats Friday at EHS Gym.  The game was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.

The Hearts hadn't played a game in two weeks and came out of the gate a little rusty, trailing 5-0 after the first few minutes of play.  They quickly shook off the rust, though, scoring the last eight points of the first quarter and the first 16 points of the second quarter to put the game away.  The Hearts outscored Salem 18-2 in the second quarter and led 26-7 at halftime.

The momentum left in the third quarter, however, as neither team scored for the first few minutes of the period.  The Hearts ended up outscoring Salem 4-2 in the third quarter to lead 30-9.  Salem finally got the lid off the basket in the final period and outscored Effingham 10-9 to account for the final margin.

Effingham shot 35% from the field, 15 of 43, hit eight of nine from the foul line, committed 12 turnovers and pulled down 35 rebounds.  The Hearts hit on two of eight three-point tries.

Salem made just seven of 40 shots for 18%, made four of eight foul shots, committed 13 turnovers and grabbed 19 rebounds.  Salem was one of 11 on three-point shots.

Matt Wohltman, Kevin Daugherty and Marcus Robinson each scored eight points to lead Effingham. Isaac Foreman scored seven points, and Kennan Mahaffey and Leighton Lark each scored four points.

Nick Conklin led Salem with nine points and Chance McCay added seven while Nick Helm scored two points and Chase Mercer added one point.

Effingham improved to 9-3 on the season and awaits the start of play Wednesday night at 8:30pm vs. Marion at the Salem Invitational Tournament.  Salem is now 3-14 on the season and also will be in action in their own tournament on Thursday night.

Effingham won the JV game 56-48.  Braydon Bone led the JV Hearts with 16 points.  Also for Effingham: Grant Wolfe eight, Michael Carie eight, Beals six, Donaldson six, Reed Schafer five and Jared Minor four.
