Effingham Girls Push Record to 18-0 With Win, Area Roundup

Effingham High School remained unbeaten on the season with a 66-36 win over Mattoon in Apollo Conference girls basketball action Thursday evening.

The Hearts took a 15-8 opening quarter lead and pushed that to 30-12 at halftime. Three EHS players hit double digits. Josie Zerrusen led the way with 19 points, connecting on six field goals, including three trifectas, and four of six free throws. Lauren Stephenson chipped in with 12 points while Stephanie Robb added 10. Stephenson made two three-pointers.

Mattoon was led by CC Thompson with 10 points.

The Hearts are now 6-0 in the conference, 18-0 on the season and will open play in their own round robin tournament Monday against Neoga at 7:45 p.m. The first game features Effingham St. Anthony against Centralia at 6:15.

At St. Joseph

Teutopolis had a hard-fought first half before breaking loose in the second half for a 41-26 win over St. Joseph-Ogden.

T-town edged ahead 8-7 after the opening period on three baskets by Jessica Schumacher. T-town still held a slight 21-18 halftime lead after Cierra Thompson connected on two three-pointers and had seven in the period.

The Wooden Shoes then had a 20-8 second half for the final point spread. The Shoes connected on free throws in the final period. Madeline Hartka was the lone T-town player in double figures with 13. Thompson finished with nine and Schumacher seven. Hartke and Haley Giles led in rebounds with six each. Thompson led in steals with four.

At Flora

Casey-Westfield and Lawrenceville were victorious Thursday evening in the Little Illini Conference Tournament.

Lawrenceville downed Robinson 56-35 while Casey-Westfield won over Edwards County (Albion) 52-38.

The tournament continues Saturday as Marshall faces Red Hill at 3 p.m. followed by Newton against Palestine/Hutsonville at 4:30, Olney taking on Lawrenceville at 6 and Flora facing Casey-Westfield at 7:30.
