Purdue Hands Illinois Loss, College Roundup

Purdue Edges Illinois

(Champaign, IL) -- A.J. Hammons scored 17 points to lead Purdue to a 66-58 win over Illinois. The Illini led 33-29 at the half, but the Boilers opened the second half with a 10-to-5 run to regain the lead. Tracy Abrams added 13 points for Illinois, which has lost three in-a-row. Illinois is back in action Saturday night when it hosts Michigan State.

 

Indiana  Tech Falls To Madonna

LIVONIA, Mich. – Despite a strong second half, the Indiana Tech men’s basketball team suffered its fourth straight loss Wednesday, falling to Madonna at the MU Activities Center, 78-73.

The Crusaders (13-6, 9-2) led from the opening tip, scoring nine of the first 13 points to jump out to a 9-4 lead. A jumper and a pair of free throws from Antwan Cathey (Memphis, Tenn.) cut the lead to one, 9-8. Another run by Madonna increased the lead to 10, 22-12 with 10:25 to play, but the Warriors (11-8, 6-5) kept fighting scoring the next 10 points, seven from Jeff Hoskins (Kalamazoo, Mich.), to tie the game at 22. The two teams traded baskets over the next three minutes with Tech trailing by just one, 27-26, with 3:54 to play, however, MU closed the half on a 8-0 run to account for the nine-point, 35-26 lead into the break.

The Warriors didn’t give up, battling through the second half, despite trailing by as many as 14 points, 51-37, with 13:26 left to play. The Orange and Black cut the lead to eight on a John Cooksey (Spencer, Okla.) layup at the 11:38 mark, but another run by the Crusaders stretched the lead back to 13 points, 56-43. Tech continued to claw their way back into the contest, outscoring MU 28-17 over the next nine minutes to cut the lead to two points, 73-71 with 28 seconds to play. Unfortunately the Crusaders made their free throws down the stretch to extend the lead to the final margin, 78-73.

Effingham's Jeremy Wohltman connected on three of nine field goals for six points. He also had two assistss and three steals for Indiana Tech.

Michigan State Wins

(Evanston, IL) -- Fourth-ranked Michigan State pulled away in the second half to beat Northwestern 54-40 last night in Evanston. Gary Harris led the Spartans with 14 points, Keith Appling added 11 and Branden Dawson had six points and 11 rebounds  MSU, now 16-1 overall and 5-0 in the Big Ten, will tip off against the Illini in Illinois Saturday.

No. 8 Oklahoma State Trounces TCU

(Stillwater, OK) -- Marcus Smart scored a game-high 20 points as eighth-ranked Oklahoma State trounced TCU 82-50 in Stillwater. Karviar Shepard netted 13 points and Amric Fields had 11 points and six rebounds for the Horned Frogs, who fell to 9-7 on the year and 0-4 in the Big 12.

Texas Tech Stuns #13 Baylor

(Lubbock, TX) -- Jaye Crockett scored 19 points and Toddrick Gotcher added 17 as Texas Tech stunned 13th-ranked Baylor 82-72 in Lubbock. The Red Raiders improved to 9-8 on the season and 1-3 in the Big 12. Kenny Chery netted a game-high 22 points for the Bears, who slipped to 13-3 and 1-2. Baylor hosts Oklahoma on Saturday, while Texas Tech takes on TCU in Fort Worth.
