NEWTON -- Effingham High School handed Newton a 46-39 loss in non-conference girls basketball action Tuesday evening. The contest was a makeup game.

Newton held a 10-9 opening quarter lead and still led 21-20 at halftime. But the Hearts got untracked with an 11-6 third period run for a 31-27 lead going into the final period then had a 15-12 run to pull out the win.

Caitlin Kaufman tallied 16 for the winners while Jantzen Michael added 13 and Josie Zerrusen chipped in with 10.

"We survived," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "In the first half we could not buy a basket. We took good shots and just didn't make anything. We did a little better job in the second half but missed seven free throws in a row that could have put the game away. But to our credit we fought through that and finally made the last four. Newton played us really tough. We were fortunate to earn a hard-fought win."

Newton was led by Richards with 13 points. The Eagles drop to 8-9 on the season.

Effingham improves to a perfect 17-0 on the season and is back in action against Mattoon  Thursday.
