Newton Downs St. Anthony in Low-Scoring Game

The Newton Eagles pushed their record to 12-1 on the season with a low-scoring 36-27 victory over the St. Anthony Bulldogs at the Enlow Center Friday night.

The Eagles led 5-2 after one quarter and 16-14 at halftime before the Bulldogs pulled ahead 23-22 after three quarters.  Newton outscored the Bulldogs 14-4 in the final period, though, to post the nine-point win.

Luke Stone scored 10 points to lead Newton.  Also for the Eagles: Caleb Chesnut nine, Gunner Pickens eight, Brock Mammoser six, Corey Workman two and Luke Huston one.

John Goeckner led St. Anthony with eight points.  Andrew Gardewine and Derek Rios each scored six points, Alex Hoelscher had five points, and Neil Williams scored two points.

St. Anthony had their nine-game winning streak snapped to drop to 10-4 on the season.

St. Anthony won the JV game 60-40.  For the Bulldogs: Connor Greene and Jeff Niebrugge 12 each, Derek Rios and Kyle Hartke 10 each, Nick Grunloh and James Kabbes six each, and Kyle Bourgeois and Braden Puckett two each.  For Newton: Vahling 14, Cartright 10, Bierman and Jansen four each, Meinhart, Stone, Weber and Spitzer two each.
