Elks Hoop Shoot Winners Announced

Three boys and three girls, ages 8-13 years old, won first round competition in the Elks’ “Hoop Shoot” free throw contest held at Effingham High School Saturday, December 2 and have been named local Effingham Elks “Hoop Shoot” champions. There were 87 participants from the area schools, 44 girls and 43 boys.

The first three places were awarded trophies in each age category: ages 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13. All of the participants received Elks National freebie, Culvers ice cream and Dairy Queen coupons. Raffle prizes were donated by Prime Sole, Wal-Mart, Niemerg’s and State Farm.

The six champions will now advance to the East Central District Hoop Shoot Contest which will be held Sunday, January 5 at Pana High School.

Registration starts at noon and the shoot will start at 1 p.m.

FIRST PLACE

12- 13 year olds

Girls -- Natalie Carie (Effingham Sacred Heart) made 19 of 25, shootoff, four of five. Daughter of Dennis and Tammy Carie and winner of Doris (Carie) Zerrusen award

10-11 years olds

Boys -- Jarett Tharp (Newton), made 18 of 25, shootoff, four of five. Son of Jay and Linda Tharp

Girls -- Hope Bueker (Sigel), made 16 of 25. Daughter of Scott and Peggy Bueker.

8-9 year olds

Made out of 25 free throws

Boys -- Austin Wittenborg (Stewardson-Strasburg), made 20 of 25. Son of Barry and Courtney Wittenborg.

Girls -- Emily Konkel(Teutopolis), made 18 of 25. Daughter of Allen and Cindy Konkel.

SECOND PLACE

12-13 year olds

Sadie Bueker (Sigel), made 19 of 25, shootoff, three of five. Daughter of Scott and Peggy Bueker.

Boys -- Aidan Jahraus (Altamont Lutheran), made 18 of 25. Son of Brady and Staci Jahraus.

Girls -- Hayley Diveley (Effingham), made 15 of 25. Daughter of Angela Davis.

THIRD PLACE

Girls -- Abby Frohning (Newton), made 18 of 25.

Girls -- Kamdyn Dunn (Neoga), made 10 of 25.

The 22nd Annual Doris (Carie) Zerrusen Plaque was given to Natalie Carie for making the most free throws of all girl participants at the local Elks “Hoop Shoot.” Carie made 19 of 25 free throws. The plaque was given out by Zerrusen. There were 44 participants.

The Eighth Annual Taylor Worman Plaque was given to Luke Ungrund for making the most free throws of the 43 boys participants by making 23 out of 25 free throws at the local Elks “Hoop Shoot”. Taylor Worman’s father gave out the award.

Zerrusen was past National Champion of the Elks Hoop Shoot in 1982 and Worman was in 2001 and 2004.
