Arizona Tops Cougars

(Tucson, AZ) -- Kaleb Tarczewski was the only player in double-figures with 11 points as the Arizona Wildcats leveled Washington State 60-25 in Tucson.  Aaron Gordon added five points and 10 rebounds for U of A, which shot 44-percent as it improved to 14-0. Wazzu shot 20-percent in defeat. Arizona plays Washington Saturday.
 

Wisconsin Whips Northwestern

(Evanston, IL) -- Alex Olah tallied a game-best 23 points to go with six rebounds as the Wildcats fell 76-49 to number-five Wisconsin at Welsh-Ryan Arena.  Drew Crawford was the only other Northwestern player in double-digits with 10 points. The Wildcats fell to 7-7 on the year and 0-1 in the Big Ten.  Northwestern is at Michigan on Sunday.


Wichita State Downs SIUC

(Carbondale,  IL) -- Cleanthony Early scored a game-high 23 points to help lead eighth-ranked Wichita State to an 82-67 win over Southern Illinois in the Missouri Valley Conference opener for both teams. Fred VanVleet had 17 points and a game-high seven assists, while Nick Wiggins added 13 for the Shockers (14-0, 1-0), whose perfect start tied the best winning streak in school history dating back to the 1953-54 season. Sean O'Brien and Desmar Jackson each tallied 19 points for the Salukis (4-10, 0-1), who have lost two straight.


Utah Falls To Oregon

(Salt Lake City , UT) -- Utah lost on a steal and dunk with one second left in overtime, coming up short against ninth-ranked Oregon 70-68. Jordan Loveridge led the Utes with 21 points and Dallin Bachynski added 11 points and 12 rebounds. Utah fell to 11-2 and 0-1 in Pac-12 play.


Gonzaga Rips Saint Mary's

(Spokane, WA) -- Gonzaga got 15 points each from Kevin Pangos and Przemek Karnowski in a 73-51 win over Saint Mary's at the McCarthey Athletic Center. The 21st-ranked Bulldogs improved to 13-2 and 3-0 in WCC play. Gonzaga has won three straight and hosts Pacific Saturday.


Buffs Beat Beavers

(Boulder, CO) -- Josh Scott tallied 13 points and 10 rebounds to lift number-24 Colorado to a 64-58 win against Oregon State at the Coors Events Center.  Askia Booker and Jaron Hopkins also had 13 points apiece for the Buffaloes, who moved to 12-2 and 1-0 in the Pac-12. The Buffs host number-nine Oregon Sunday.

 

Hot-shooting Eastern Kentucky Upends EIU

CHARLESTON, Ill.  – Eastern Kentucky hit nearly 60 percent of its field-goal attempts as they upended the Panther men’s basketball team, 100-81, on Thursday night inside Lantz Arena. EIU drops to 4-9 overall and 1-1 in Ohio Valley Conference action.

The Colonels (10-4, 1-0 OVC) led from start to finish and had a double-figure lead for the final 25 minutes of action. EIU hit its first five field goals to start the contest, but committed four turnovers during that span that led to seven points for the Colonels. All told, EKU converted 17 Panther miscues into 28 points on the night.

EKU hit 59.6 percent of its field-goal attempts, going 34-for-57 from the floor. The Panthers posted a .526 field-goal percentage on the night (20-for-38), their second-highest percentage on the year.


Morehead State Escapes With Win

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Morehead State fended off a furious comeback attempt by SIUE men's basketball Thursday night to escape with a 70-63 win over SIUE in the Ohio Valley Conference opener at Vadalabene Center.

The Cougars trailed by as many as 13 points in the second half and trailed 62-51 with 5:51 left in the game before a 9-0 run had trimmed Morehead State's lead to just two points (62-60) with 2:39 to play.

Angelo Warner snapped the run with a jumper to put the Eagles ahead 64-60 with 2:22 left. The Cougars cut the lead to two twice more. Keaton Jackson sank one of two free throw attempts with 1:10 to play for a 65-63 score. Morehead State scored the game's final five points, including three from the foul line.

Trailing 67-63 with 47 seconds to play, Rozell Nunn got an open look for a three from the left wing. His shot rimmed out and the Eagles snagged the rebound.

 

Illinois Takes On Penn State

(Champaign, IL) -- The Big Ten Basketball season is under way for Illinois. The Fighting Illini look to go to 2-0 in the conference when it takes on Penn State Saturday afternoon. Illinois is 12-1 and the Nittany Lions are 9-and-5 overall.
