The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes edged the Effingham Hearts 44-41 in boys high school basketball action Tuesday night.  The game at EHS Gym was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.  The game was also videotaped and will be available on the website and as a DVD for purchase.

Effingham took a 10-8 first quarter lead and still led 20-19 at halftime.  Teutopolis, though, was able to cash in enough on the offensive end to outscore the Hearts 13-8 in the third quarter to lead 32-28 after the period and that was enough to hang for the win as Effingham outscored the Shoes 13-12 in the fourth quarter.

Each team was down a player for much of the contest; Effingham's Leighton Lark due to fouls and Teutopolis' Reed Hardiek due to injury after his chin hit the floor hard during a fall.  After some time in the training room, Hardiek returned to the bench but did not return to the action.

Cody Will stepped up for the Wooden Shoes with a big second half to score 18 points and lend a steady hand to the offense.

Also for Teutopolis: Brette Mette nine, Justin Kenter seven, Reed Hardiek five, Ryan Sandschafer three, Bobby Wenthe two.

Effingham was led by Isaac Foreman who had a big fourth quarter to total 10 points.

Also for Effingham: Leighton Lark nine, Kevin Daugherty eight, Matt Wohltman six, and Kennan Mahaffey, Phil Knight, Braydon Bone and Marcus Robinson two each.

Effingham made 39% of its shots, 17 of 44, but missed a number of shots around the basket.  The Hearts were six of eight from the line, turned the ball over 15 times and grabbed 21 rebounds while making just one of five three-point tries.

Teutopolis shot 53% from the field, hitting 16 of 30 shots, added nine of 12 from the line, committed 16 turnovers and pulled down 20 rebounds while making three of seven three-point shots.

Teutopolis improved to 6-1 on the season, while Effingham fell to 4-2.

Teutopolis won the JV game 58-56.  The Shoes had four players in double figures: Brock Mette 12, Devin Smith and Tyler Gebben 11 each, and Jordan Thoele 10.  Grant Wolfe and Michael Carie each scored 14 points to lead Effingham.
